About Me

My background: Why I became a menopause hypnotherapist

menopause hypnotherapist

My name is Carys Clargo. I’m a menopause hypnotherapist based in South Wales. Like many women, I reached a turning point when I was entering midlife. My marriage ended and, because I’d been a stay-at-home Mum at the time, my identity changed overnight. I had suddenly become an unemployed single parent, which was a brutal awakening! At times I wondered if I’d ever get through it. But I did. And if you’re in a similar position, you will too. Because circumstances change, and we change with them.

Despite the relentless challenges of that time, I didn’t give up on my dream of a career in Psychology. So, after talking myself out of it many times, I eventually enrolled on a part-time university degree course. It wasn’t easy, but, five years later, I achieved a first-class honours degree. Then, in the final year of my studies, I also decided to train in hypnosis, subsequently establishing my own hypnotherapy practice. And that’s when everything changed for me.

Initially I didn’t set out to become a menopause hypnotherapist. However, most of my clients were women – midlife women. And they presented with a range of issues including low mood, unexplained anxiety, loss of confidence, alcohol misuse and feelings of worthlessness. I’ve sat with these women, talked with them, and listened to them. I’ve even cried with them. And through helping them, I eventually realised my vocation was to work solely with midlife women. And that’s why I’m now a menopause hypnotherapist.

My menopause experience

In my early forties, I started to feel what I can only describe as different. But not in a good way! Out of the blue I started experiencing feelings of anxiety. I also had panic attacks that became so severe, I was unable to drive my car. But, by far the worst experience was heart palpitations that were so terrifying I thought I was dying.

When I look back now, I wish I had been aware of perimenopause. I reached a point where my heart palpitations became so bad that I once ended up in A and E, convinced my heart was about to stop. Fortunately, all the tests were clear – a huge relief. However, not once did anyone tell me that my issue may have been hormonal. Not once. That’s truly shocking. But my experience isn’t unique. I know many women who have had a similar experience. Perhaps you’re one of them.

Good news!

The good news is that the narrative around menopause is changing, albeit gradually. This is thanks to women like us becoming more vocal about our personal experiences. More and more GPs are now undergoing menopause training. And, more and more workplaces are now implementing menopause policies. This is heartening, but there is still such a long way to go. I believe that, as midlife women, we can be part of the menopause revolution by ensuring the conversation continues. In doing so, future generations of women will be so much more equipped to manage their own experiences. When women support women, great things happen!
