  • Following huge demand, my Fear of Driving during Menopause hypnosis audio is now available from my online store. Click here to find out more about the recording.

I believe there is a connection between a fear of driving and the menopause. And I also believe that hypnosis, combined with simple self-help techniques, has helped me overcome my driving anxiety. Read more to find out how it could help you too.

My personal experience of driving anxiety

Way back in my perimenopause years (before I’d even heard of perimenopause!), I suddenly became a nervous driver. Nervous is an understatement. I became a terrified driver. I’d been driving competently since I was eighteen years old with no issues at all. One night, however, everything changed when I was driving from South Wales to Bristol for a couple of nights away. I was about halfway along the Severn Bridge when it happened for the first time.

I was having a panic attack

Although I didn’t know it at the time, I was in the throes of a massive panic attack. I felt sick. My heart felt as though it was about to crash through my chest. I was breathless, hot, dizzy, and trembling all over. All of that combined with the most awful fear that I was not only a danger to myself, but also a danger to every other driver on the road. I honestly thought I was going to die and cause a catastrophic accident in the process.

Obviously, I’m still here to tell the tale! And when I got over the bridge, the panic started to subside. But the experience of an enjoyable few days away was ruined. That’s because all I could think about was having to return home and that meant driving back over the bridge. I was consumed by the thought that it would happen again. I wasn’t wrong. Because it did. I’ve never been so grateful to get home. I was so relieved that I just cried and cried. I couldn’t stop crying. What on earth had just happened? Why had I suddenly gone from being a competent, experienced driver to a frightened and, frankly, dangerous driver?

Things got really bad

It didn’t end there. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a one-off incident. My fear of driving became so bad that I had to stop for a while. The thought of motorways or dual carriageways sent me into a crying, anxious mess. I just couldn’t do it. As for bridges – forget it. Even when I did manage to drive short distances again, I couldn’t cross bridges. Just the sight of one in the distance became a trigger for my driving anxiety. I later found out that a fear of bridges is known as gephyrophobia, and it’s not that uncommon. Of course, it was a relief to find out that I wasn’t alone, and I wasn’t mad. Many women experience a fear of driving during menopause. You can find similar stories to mine all over the internet. However, although I was glad it wasn’t just me, I still had the issues with my driving. The panic and anxiety hadn’t subsided. And it was horrible!

Hypnosis improved everything for me

When I trained in hypnosis, I learned many techniques that can work very well for reducing symptoms of anxiety. And those techniques can work so well for a fear of driving. So, not only did I help other people who were experiencing similar symptoms to me, I also helped myself. And things improved, they really did.

How are things now?

I no longer have a fear of driving over bridges. I’m confident that it’s gone. I’m also fine with dual carriageways. I don’t know how I’d be with motorway driving as it’s not something I ever need to do. But, my driving anxiety in general, is so much better than it was.

Fear of driving and the menopause: How can hypnosis help?

Firstly, you should discuss your symptoms with your doctor. Research has shown that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can have a positive effect on women’s emotions. Hypnosis can work very well but it isn’t a replacement for medical treatment. However, as a complementary therapy, it can work well alongside it. And, for women who aren’t medically suited to HRT, it can be a fantastic alternative treatment.

The seemingly unbreakable cycle of anxiety

When we feel frightened or anxious then we tend to practise those feelings. We may not be aware that we’re practising them because they’re integrated in our subconscious. That’s the part of the mind that stores every single experience we’ve ever had. And it’s also able to retrieve those experiences. So, when we’re anxious, our subconscious retrieves all the thoughts and feelings we associate with anxiety. And we play them out, over and over again. So, it becomes a never-ending cycle.

My approach to working with a fear of driving and the menopause is one of using positive suggestions that can help disrupt our anxious thought patterns. When we do that and we introduce new thought patterns associated with calmness and being in control, then it’s possible that our behaviours change as a result. And the more we practise then we can significantly improve things. That’s because our brains adapt in response to our experiences. Therefore, when we feed the brain new, positive information, then the brain can produce a new, improved behavioural response. And this is where hypnosis and hypnotherapy can be so effective. Read more about how it works here.

It’s not magic…

It would be lovely if hypnosis was a magic wand and worked for everyone. But, of course, we’re all different and results vary, as they do with anything. My advice to you if you’re considering hypnosis for driving anxiety would be to try it. Most people think of hypnosis as being expensive, but it really doesn’t have to be.

If you are experiencing driving anxiety during menopause, then my Fear of Driving during Menopause hypnosis audio could help you.
