Can hypnotherapy help with menopause anxiety?

Date: 26 September 2021 | By: hotchicks

Why do many women feel anxious during menopause?

In answer to the question ‘can hypnotherapy help with menopause anxiety?’ – yes, it can. But more of that later. As our hormones fluctuate in menopause, this can have a negative impact on our emotions. In turn, many women can experience a low mood, and sensations of panic and anxiety. These feelings can present without warning and often leave women feeling confused and frightened. This happened to me in perimenopause. Because I’d never experienced anything like it, at times I thought I was losing my mind.

What treatments are available for menopause anxiety?

Firstly, it’s very important to rule out any underlying issues. So, always discuss your symptoms and care options with your doctor. Research has shown that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can have a positive effect on women’s moods.

Secondly, maintaining as healthy a lifestyle as possible during menopause is very important. In that respect, we should eat healthily, take regular exercise, and try to sleep well. It’s also important to stop smoking and cut down on alcohol. Maintaining good hormone health in menopause is vital. Read more about that here.

Complementary therapies

Complementary therapies can also help with anxiety during menopause. I know from my personal experience that hypnosis can be especially effective. I qualified as a hypnotherapist during my perimenopause years. So, at that time, I was experiencing sudden bouts of anxiety and panic. At its worst, I was having panic attacks when driving. I experienced my first attack when driving over a bridge. This subsequently led to me having an intense and irrational fear of bridges. I now know this to be a disorder called gephyrophobia, and, surprisingly, it’s not that uncommon. Additionally, on some days, I felt so anxious that I couldn’t even manage a trip to the supermarket. That’s because the thought of talking to people was overwhelming. Therefore, I sometimes used avoidance, which is a common, yet unhelpful coping mechanism. Avoidance is unhelpful because it gives into those unwanted feelings instead of taking steps to overcome them.

How does hypnosis work?

It’s important to know that hypnosis isn’t a magic wand. So many people achieve positive changes with hypnotherapy, but it doesn’t work for everyone. That’s why it’s imperative to avoid therapists who guarantee results. Because not only is that impossible, it’s also unethical, and it does our profession a disservice. However, when it does work, it tends to work very quickly. That’s what sets it apart from other complementary therapies. Hypnotherapy works by a therapist making suggestions to the subconscious mind. We’re not aware of this part of our minds, because it’s unconscious. Every experience we’ve ever had is stored within our subconscious mind. Its role is to store and retrieve information. For example, when we make a cup of tea, we instinctively know how to do it. We don’t have to consciously consider each step we take to make the cup of tea. That’s because all the information we need is stored in our subconscious. Going back to my fear of bridges, that first panic attack and its associated feelings became stored in my subconscious mind. So, every time I approached a bridge after that first experience, my subconscious retrieved those feelings of fear and panic.

Let’s ask that question again: Can hypnotherapy help with menopause anxiety?

Although I can’t pinpoint exactly when my fear subsided, it did. And I can say that I believe it was because of my clinical work with anxiety, that everything improved for me. When we work with anxiety, our focus as hypnotherapists, is firmly on what our client wants to achieve. It goes without saying that someone who is feeling anxious wants to feel calm, and in control. Therefore, we make suggestions that can help people change their thought processes. At first, this tends to be practised at a conscious level. But the more we practise positive and calming suggestions, then it’s very possible that they become integrated into our subconscious. And that’s when we achieve the changes we need. Not only is that a great outcome for the client, but it can also benefit the therapist. I’m happy to say that I no longer have a fear of bridges and my anxiety is at a normal level!
